How to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals while Implementing the Sendai Framework

Local governments contribute to the achievement of SDGs while implementing the Sendai Framework of Disaster Risk Reduction. This tool aims to raise awareness of the linkages between international agendas while implementing them at local level. It is developed for the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction to reach experts on the topics of disaster risk reduction, urban specialists, representatives from the civil Society, or representatives from the local as well as national governments.

About City WORKS

This tool is developed by SV Urbanisation as part of the realisation of City WORKS, a new approach for the integrated implementation of global agendas at local level. City WORKS explains the relevance and impact of global agendas for cities, offers different tools to identify, prioritise and plan local action that is linked to e.g. the SDGs, and also addresses stakeholder participation and mobilising financing for implementation. In that way, City WORKS represents a compass for cities to overcome urban challenges and align local action with global agendas.

Because in 2015 and 2016, the global community adopted five agendas that are vital for sustainable development: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the New Urban Agenda (NUA). Adopted and ratified by national governments, these global agendas need to be implemented by all levels in order to be effective. For instance, up to 65 per cent of the SDG targets depend on action by local governments. Thus, local governments, which are implementing the Sendai Framework, contribute at the same time to achieving SDGs.

Tool design

Tool users are asked about measures that are/ can be implemented in their city for Disaster Risk Reduction. With this quiz, they find out how those measures are linked to achieving the SDGs. The outcome is a general score about the performance of their city on Disaster Risk Reduction. Furthermore, the tool shows the user potential contributions of his/ her city to certain SDGs.

The outcomes of this tool are not exhaustive nor scientifically quantified, but aim to sensitize participants for potential synergies/ benefits.
